- Abstract: Grouted splice sleeve technology is adopted in the precast concrete structural element connections, however, the steel sleeve has limited the development and application of prefabricated concrete structures due to its limited corrosion resistance and grout compactness detection. This paper develops a glass fiber reinforced polymer splice sleeve with corrugated profile (CP-GFRP splice sleeve) which has several advantages such as light weight, sheet material, excellent tensile capacity, good corrosion resistance and no shielding effect on electromagnetic wave. To assess its performance, a series of fifteen grouted splice sleeve finite element models are established and verified via experimental results in terms of load-displacement curves and failure patterns. Factors affecting its mechanical behavior and failure characteristics, such as sleeve material, sleeve configuration, sleeve thickness, sleeve diameter, rebar embedded length and interface grout strength are investigated. In addition, the longitudinal stress-strain responses of spliced rebar with different failure modes and the stress distribution of sleeve and grout are discussed. The results indicate that the GFRP splice sleeve with corrugated profile has better confinement performance to resist the bond-slip of the grout. Moreover, the detailed geometry design of CP-GFRP splice sleeve obtained from simulated results is proposed for engineering application. Finally, the analytical model based on the confinement stress obtained from experimental and simulated results is established. The analytical model can predict the bond strength of CP-GFRP splice sleeve with comparative accuracy. Highlights: An improved type of CP-GFRP splice sleeve is proposed with sufficient bond strength. The grouted splice sleeve FEM is established and verified via experimental results. Extensive parameters are analyzed to explore the mechanical behavior of CP-GFRP splice sleeve. The mechanical model of CP-GFRP splice sleeve is analyzed. … (more)
