- Abstract: This study aims to fabricate Nb2 O5 -based composite films, with particle size ranging from 70 to 90 nm, using a niobium chloride (NbCl5 ) ethanol solution and a transparent urethane resin. Transparent films were obtained, which turned blue when exposed to UV irradiation. Upon placing the colored films in a dark room, the films were restored to transparent. Thus, the Nb2 O5 -based composite films showed a reversible photochromic property. They were saturated with color for about 30 min and bleached back to the near initial transparency after keeping the films in a dark room for 30 min. Highlights: Composite films with Nb2 O5 nanoparticle embedded using transparent urethane resin matrix were fabricated. Nb2 O5 nanoparticles in the composite films were confirmed by TEM and SAED observation. The fabricated Nb2 O5 based composite films were transparent an initial state, and tuned blue by UV irradiation. The resulting Nb2 O5 nanoparticle based composite films showed a reversible photochromic property.
