- Abstract: In the boundary layer of fluid on a moving solid surface (such as on a moving vehicle e.g. ships) a thin body is translating parallel to the surface. The streamwise movement of the body relative to the solid surface is substantial, with the upstream or downstream velocity being comparable with the free-stream velocity. The dynamic fluid/body interaction here incorporates the effects of incident vorticity, nonlinear and separating flow. Modelling, analysis and reduced computation explore the all-important influences of body shape, moment of inertia and centre-of-mass location. These influences and the initial conditions affect whether nonlinear oscillations of the fluid and body motions continue or fully nonlinear focussing occurs after a finite time.
