- Abstract: The Sm(Co, Fe)4 B alloys were prepared by rapid quenching and subsequent heat treatment. As-rapidly quenched SmCo4- x Fex B (x = 0–2) specimens mainly consisted of the amorphous phase. Subsequent annealing resulted in the formation of the SmCo4 B or Sm(Co, Fe)4 B phase. The annealed specimens exhibited high coercivity, with the value depending on the composition and annealing temperature. SmCo4-x Fex B (x = 0.5–1.5) specimens annealed at 973 K consisted of the Sm(Co, Fe)4 B phase and exhibited high coercivity, comparable to that of the high-performance rare-earth magnets. Highlights: As-rapidly quenched Sm(Co, Fe)4 B alloys mainly consisted of the amorphous phase. The SmCo4 B or Sm(Co, Fe)4 B phase was obtained by annealing of the amorphous specimens. The specimens with the SmCo4 B or Sm(Co, Fe)4 B phase exhibited high coercivity.
