- Abstract: The ternary Al–Mn–Ni system plays an important role in the development of several structural and functional materials. To accomplish a purposeful development of alloys related to this system, an assessment of the thermodynamic parameters was performed. The assessment is based on literature data, as well as experimental investigations regarding the phase equilibria at 800 and 1000 °C. Moreover, the decomposition of the disordered A 2 phase in the Mn-rich corner of the Al–Mn–Ni system was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and in-situ X-ray diffraction. Calculations based on the present description are in excellent agreement with the experimental data available in literature and reproduce the experimental results of the present work. Highlights: A thermodynamic assessment of the Al–Mn–Ni system was developed for the first time. Experimental investigations in the Mn-rich corner of Al–Mn–Ni were conducted. The disordered A 2 phase decomposes by an eutectoid type of reaction into A 1 and B 2. The metastable miscibility gap between A 2 and B 2 can be predicted by the dataset. The liquidus projection of the Al–Mn–Ni system was calculated. Graphical abstract: fx1
