- Abstract: In this review, we discuss the fundamental reaction principles from thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives, the course of the reverse reaction, and the remaining challenges in VCTRM. A comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanism and the key factors determining the VCTRM performance is important for advancing technological applications. We aim to provide an overview of the recent advances in VCTRM with an emphasis on (a) the effects of calcium fluoride as a catalyst for the vacuum magnesium reduction process; (b) the occurrence and mechanism of the reduction reaction; and (c) the mechanism of the reverse reaction, Mg(g)+CO→MgO + C, in the cooling process. The article is devoted to the description of developments aimed at increasing the efficiency of the vacuum process, which can make it competitive with existing magnesium production processes. Highlights: The simplest and cleanest route to Mg metal production, the most promising candidates in today's emerging technology. Describing the reduction mechanism of vacuum carbothermal reduction to produce magnesium using Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. The mechanism of catalyst in two-step Mg/MgO thermochemical redox cycle.
