- Highlights: Copperheads and cottonmouths have nearly identical preferred body temperatures. Cottonmouths maintain a higher body temperature in May and June. Cottonmouths thermoregulate more effectively than copperheads in May, June, and July. Copperheads and cottonmouths exploit their thermal environments similarly.
