- Abstract: Fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are used more and more widely in industries, and the material's difficult machinability has attracted many research efforts. Accurate prediction of the cutting forces during machining process of fiber-reinforced PMCs is of great importance to plan and improve such processes. There is not a comprehensive review on cutting force modelling in machining of fiber-reinforced PMCs. This paper mainly reviews the development of cutting force models, which are established for the cutting process of fiber-reinforced PMCs. Research progresses related to four typical processes, i.e. orthogonal cutting, milling, drilling and turning, are reviewed and introduced in detail. The reported models such as mechanistic models, macro-mechanical models, micro-mechanical models, finite element models and artificial neural networks (ANNs) models, which are established either from the basic principle of traditional theoretical analyses or from numerical simulations, are explained. The modelling laws and future study trends are also discussed and summarized.
