- Abstract : Solar green technology : The cover picture illustrates a nature‐inspired, low‐cost dye‐sensitized solar cell (DSSC) for renewable energy generation. The device in this work is the first based on an aqueous choline chloride/glycerol eutectic mixture (deep eutectic solvent, DES) as an effective and innovative electrolyte solvent. DESs are being tested in many fields of chemistry; this paper shows a proof of concept that DESs can be successfully employed also in the solar energy field. By combining a DES with a proper hydrophilic sensitizer, comparable power conversion efficiencies were obtained with respect to those furnished by traditional solar DSSC devices using hazardous, toxic, and volatile solvents.
