- Abstract : OBJECTIVE: To identify a threshold score on the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) in-training examination (ITE) that predicts success on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) written examination. METHODS: A cohort study was performed on CREOG ITE and ABOG written examination results from residents who completed 4 years of CREOG ITE at Reading Hospital (Reading, PA) and The Greenville Health System (Greenville, SC) between 2002 and 2012. RESULTS: Seventy-one residents, with an overall pass rate of 81.7%, were included for analysis. A postgraduate year (PGY)-4 score of 200 on CREOG ITE or twice in any of the PGYs resulted in a 100% ABOG written examination pass rate. Scoring 205 or higher in any PGY also was associated with a 100% pass rate. If the resident was unable to obtain 200, the resident had 35–45% chance of failing the ABOG written examination. CONCLUSION: The CREOG ITE was designed to provide feedback for the resident and program. As part of the accreditation process, residency programs must have 80% of their graduates pass the ABOG examination over the previous 3 years. Based on the results of this study, residents would benefit from attaining a CREOG ITE score of at least 200, given the trend of CREOG scores to increase on a yearly basis. Scores lower than this value should be used by the resident and program to identify weaknesses and provide appropriate educational interventions.
