Abstract

Abstract : Silicon‐Integrated Lasers In article number 1700206, Sulakshna Kumari and co‐workers experimentally demonstrate a hybrid vertical‐cavity silicon‐integrated laser (VCSIL) with in‐plane emission into a silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide. The inset shows the optical micrograph of the fully processed VCSIL. A weak SiN grating is placed inside the cavity to couple the vertically amplified light inside the cavity into an in‐plane SiN waveguide. The grating also sets the polarization of the lasing output and provides transverse mode control.
