- ABSTRACT: Torsional vibration caused by moving vehicle loads traversing a steel girder bridge is likely to cause the traffic safety and people comfort problems. This paper investigates the use of cables made of shape memory alloy as the devices of reduction of torsional vibration for steel girder bridges. The shape memory alloy cables are featured by their small volume and expedient installation. To investigate their effect on the vibration of girder bridges, numerical simulation and experimental study are carried out. The results of torsional vibration obtained by finite element simulations are compared with the experimental ones from model testing. The finite element results have good correlation with the experimental counterparts. Comparisons have shown that the finite element model for torsional vibration of steel girder bridges with the shape memory alloy cables being treated as dampers can be used to predict the effects of shape memory alloy cables on the vibration reduction. The finite element and experimental results have shown that shape memory alloy cables can effectively reduce torsional vibrations of steel girder bridges.
