- Graphical abstract: Synthesis of polymers from iron(II) clathrochelates end-capped with 9, 9-dialkyl fluorene-2, 7-diborate is reported. Organogels were made from polyclathrochelates in organic solvents of low and medium polarity. Highlights: Synthesis of soluble organometallic polymers using iron(II) clathrochelate units. Polymers were characterized using GPC, NMR, XPS, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Gelation was induced by brief sonication of 10 wt% polymer in specific solvents. SEM reveals the formation of swollen fibrous microstructural networks. Clathrochelate structure offers the possibility to tune the polymer lipophilicity. Abstract: A series of clathrochelate polymers are reported by reacting iron(II) chloride with 9, 9-dialkyl fluorene-2, 7-diboronic acid and various vicinal dioxime units. The novel polymers were fully characterized by 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy. The linearly-linked 2D organometallic polymers form oragnogel from 10 wt% concentrations in organic solvents of low and medium polarity.
