Abstract

This paper presents a new type of cutting tool with spiral grooves for mill-grinding SiCp/Al composites. The effect type of tool and machining parameters on cutting force and special energy have been employed to evaluate the machinability through orthogonal experimental design. Results reveal that smaller cutting force and specific energy can be gained using cutting tool with helix angle (β = 50°) and spiral grooves number (n = 3). The mill-grinding width has most effect on the cutting force, while tool type has less effect on it in all of the factors used. The tool type has the most effect on the specific energy, while the cutting speed and mill-grinding width are not significant to it. The interaction of feed rate and mill-grinding width on normal cutting force is highly significant, while the combination of the cutting speed and feed rate has highly significant interaction effect on specific energy.
