Abstract

A high–speed, small–size direct injection (DI) diesel engine with maximum engine speed of 3600 rpm and 3.268 litre piston displacement developed for light–duty truck application has achieved a reduction in noise emission levels below that of swirl chamber diesels (IDI) of corresponding displacement as well as an approximate 15% fuel economy improvement over the IDI engine. Quieter DI diesel engines have been realized by applying noise reducing measures to all engine noise sources each in the most appropriate way through the identification of noise sources, studies on contributions of radiation noise sources and investigation into noise transmission routes. With respect to other DI engine performances, a 5% improvement of the out–put and torque over the IDI engine has been attained by matching and improving the combustion chamber and fuel injection system. In order to reduce exhaust gas emissions, a square cavity with squish rim around the cavity wall was developed to promote mixing of air and fuel, and to control the air swirl speed at high engine speeds.
