- The first Golf was the successor to the legendary Beetle and set new standards in its class thanks to its technical and economical superiority. Since 1974, six million vehicles have been produced all over the world. The success of the Golf is not only accounted for by the concept of an active car with a transverse engine, short back, safe running gear and a versatile passenger compartment. It is rather the case of constant further development and extension of the model series in the form of the GTI and Diesel engines, including turbocharged Diesel engines, which has reinforced the market position and secured success.
