- Engine control which has promoted the adoption of electronics technology in automobiles is developing steadily. The microcomputer has played a major role in areas such as exhaust gas control, improvement of fuel economy and driveability. The lean combustion system has been introduced to improve fuel economy, where both electronics and ceramics technologies have played important roles. The use of electronics has extended to the transmission, and a power train control that integrates the control of engine and transmission in a single package has appeared. Electronics have also been used beneath the chassis to improve controllability of the vehicle, such as the suspension and brakes. For the instrumentation, full colored liquid crystal displays have appeared which permits a freer display format than LEDs and FLTs. Non–volatile memories and EPROMs have come into use with the improvement of the technology and reliability of semiconductors.
