- Abstract: The melt-spun (Gd1-x Tbx )3 Co alloys (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) have been obtained and studied by X-ray diffraction, ac-susceptibility, magnetization in steady and pulse magnetic fields, and NMR measurements. A comparison of the results obtained on melt-spun alloys with their crystalline analogs has revealed a strong impact of amorphization on the magnetic state and magnetocaloric properties. The Gd-rich amorphous (Gd1-x Tbx )3 Co alloys (x ≤ 0.1) exhibit increased magnetic ordering temperatures in comparison with the crystalline compounds, which is attributed to the appearance of a magnetic moment on Co atoms. The substitution of Tb for Gd results in the growth of the ratio of local anisotropy to exchange. The melt quenching of the (Gd1-x Tbx )3 Co alloys allows improving their magnetocaloric properties in the temperature range from 80 K up to 170 K. Highlights: The (Gd1-x Tbx )3 Co alloys were obtained by the melt-spinning technique. Amorphization of Gd-enriched samples increases the Curie temperature. A magnetic moment on Co atoms is suggested to appear after amorphization of Gd3 Co. Amorphization of Tb-rich compounds substantially improves their MCE properties.
