- Researchers have proposed theoretical models to explain laser assisted heating and material removal of solids by solving heat conduction transient as governing equation. Literatures reveal that close form solution often fails to yield accurate results as compared to numerical approaches. The review of literature, in this paper, identifies the limitation of close form solutions. This has motivated to develop a close form solution considering Gaussian flux (TEM00) falling on a solid cylinder which is infinite along axial and radial ( r → x, z → x ) directions. Successive integral transformation and then inverses yield temperature distribution function to compute temperature profile. In comparison to earlier close form models, the present model shows significant improvement. Further, the paper discusses the variation of temperature distribution at different power, pulse duration and beam diameter as such an understanding is crucial in developing a generalised process knowledge regarding laser material interaction leading to heating and subsequent material removal.
