- In the present study, response surface methodology (RSM) is used to investigate the relationships and parametric interactions between the three controllable variables and surface roughness in cylindrical grinding. Experiments are conducted on mild steel specimens by varying process variables infeed, longitudinal feed and work speed. The surface roughness has been measured using contact stylus method. Surface roughness parameter 'Ra' is used to evaluate surface characteristics of the machined specimens. To model the proposed second-order polynomial model for surface roughness the Box Behnken experimental design has been used to estimate the model coefficients of the three factors, which are believed to influence the surface roughness in cylindrical grinding process. The response is modelled using a response surface model based on experimental results. The significant coefficients have been obtained by performing analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 5% level of significance. From the ANOVA, it is found that process parameters do not have much significant effect on the surface roughness parameter (Ra ), then response surface methodology's response optimiser is used to developing the model for prediction. The predicted result shows considerable improvement in surface roughness.
