Abstract

Drawing on a sample of Central Eurasian firms across seven countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), this paper explores the extent to which firms in the region rely on political behaviours such as spending time with or making unofficial payments (in the forms of bribes or gifts) to government officials, in order to respond to financial, infrastructure, and labour-related obstacles in the business environment. Further, the direct effects of political behaviours on firm performance and their mediating roles in the relationship between business obstacles and firm performance are also explored.
