Abstract

Ubiquitous, mobile, pervasive, and wireless (UMPW) information systems have been gaining significant attention across multiple disciplines because of the rapid deployment of a wide range of wireless and mobile technologies such as WiMax, 3G, and 4G. The relevance of UMPW technologies to the Information Systems (IS) discipline arises because these technologies profoundly impact the ways of doing things by businesses as well as individuals. This paper aims to examine the current state of UMPW research within the IS discipline. The metadata comprised of various attributes of 430 UMPW articles published in 13 mainstream IS journals from 2000 to 2010. Using a deducto-inductive approach, we develop the 17 clusters of prominent themes within the UMPW literature by conducting meta analysis of author-supplied keywords. This paper also examines levels of emphasis by the sampled journals on the identified themes. Finally, the paper also presents several longitudinal and demographic trends in UMPW research that are both useful and interesting.
