Abstract

Abstract: In the present investigation, Al2 O3 /YAG/CeO2 composites containing equal proportions of YAG and ceria powders; (10, 15 and 20 wt%); were prepared by mechanical mixing. The prepared batches were uniaxially pressed and pressureless sintered at 1600 °C for 1 h. The particle size distribution, densification, microstructure, mechanical properties and wear rate of the prepared Al2 O3 based composites were evaluated. The addition of YAG and ceria powders effectively limited the grain growth of the alumina particles. The in-situ formation of CeAl11 O18 phase was detected. The fracture toughness increased from 2.73 to 7.34 MPa m 1/2 for the samples containing 0 and 20 wt% YAG and CeO2, respectively. On the other hand, grain refinement increased the Vickers hardness, which in turn greatly enhanced the wear resistance of the studied composites.
