- Abstract: 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) was rapidly joined to titanium (Ti) alloy within seconds with an electric field above the threshold value. When the direction of the applied field was from 3YSZ to the Ti alloy, Ti filled 3YSZ thus forming a joint with shear strength of 67 ± 9 MPa. The resultant joint could be easily de-bonded by reversing the applied field. When the direction of the bonding field was from the Ti alloy to 3YSZ, the ceramic and metal were joined by producing a layer of titanium oxide and nonstoichiometric zirconium oxide at the faying surfaces. However, the achieved joining strength was only 13 ± 2 MPa, and the formed joint could not be separated successfully by applying the reversed field. An electric field-induced reaction was proposed as the mechanism of bonding and de-bonding.
