Abstract

Little is known about whether commercial e-learning portals (CELPs) in language learning are worth the investments made and the role of pedagogy surrounding CELP use is poorly elaborated. The present study surveyed 20 primary school (grades 2-6) teachers in Singapore with prior CELP experience. The results showed teachers were supportive of CELPs but were unsure of what to do or why in some cases. The teachers also raised concerns about the technology used and the potential of the material provided to promote critical thinking. In response, the paper recommends ways in which teachers' capabilities with CELPs can be increased. Particular attention is paid to a design-based approach to ICT usage that identifies the unique benefits of electronic media. The paper ends with a recommendation for a full-scale study into the use of CELPs and the planning involved in using them to adjust curriculum to accommodate students' ever-changing needs and interests.
