- Abstract: In this work, functional phosphorus elements are introduced on the surface of graphene oxide (GO), by means of "addition reaction" between oxygen containing functional group and 9, 10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO). Based on the prepared functional GO (DOPO-g-GO), a high thermally conductive and excellent fire retarded flexible film is assembled by simple solution casting technique. A remarkable strong anisotropy thermal conductivity aroused by the layered structure of the film is evidenced by the SEM observation. The much higher thermal conductivity both in in-plane (41.12 W m −1 K −1 ) or cross-plane (1.28 W m −1 K −1 ) directions might be attributed to the formation of π-π stacking between the layered nanosheets. In addition, due to the incorporation of DOPO, the film can keep firm when exposed to the fire. The peak heat release rate of the film is only 58 W g −1, which is reduced by 6.2-folds compared with pristine GO film.
