Abstract

Current studies on innovation in the context of economic development usually focus on highly urbanised metropolitan areas which have attained exceptional levels of prosperity with the presence of strong associative organisations, intensive sharing of knowledge and an important number of firms belonging to high-tech sectors or recognised for their strong creativity. The aim of this study is to expand some aspects of research on this subject, looking more closely at the role of local institutions in endogenous dynamics of development and the mechanisms inherent to small scale innovation systems in non-metropolitan regions. The comparative analysis is focused on the regions of La Pocatiere and Olds in Canada, Aurillac in France and Gembloux in Belgium.
