Abstract

Summary: An 11‐year‐old Spanish Pure Bred gelding was evaluated for progressive weight loss and exercise intolerance. An ante‐mortem biopsy and post‐mortem histopathological examination of the duodenum revealed a duodenal adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, a medullary thyroid carcinoma of the left thyroid gland and multiple bilateral follicular thyroid adenomas were diagnosed post‐mortem. Serum concentration of calcitonin in this case was markedly increased in comparison to two breed and age matched control horses. This case report shows the rare and independent occurrence of two different types of carcinomas in one horse and highlights the diagnostic value of calcitonin measurements for diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma in horses.
