- Abstract: Herein, a green, renewable, value-added environmentally friendly, and cost-effective soybean meal-based resin was prepared in this study inspired by the quality of reinforced concrete structure combined with the concept of increasing the added value of biomass materials. A series of hybrid composite materials were developed consisting of two reinforcements in the soybean meal resins to compare their varying mechanical properties. The soybean meal resin material acted as a matrix constituent with the primary reinforcement of kenaf fibers (KF) and secondary reinforcement of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). The wet shear strength of hybrid composite adhesive was increased from 0.38 to 1.15 MPa after the addition of 1, 2, 3-propanetriol-diglycidyl-ether (PTGE), KF, and KH560-HNTs; the solid content improved by 20.50% and the toughness and thermal stability of the adhesive considerably improved. The proposed approach of including PTGE/KF/KH560-HNTs in soybean meal blended to enhance the physical properties, cost-effectiveness, and value-added environmental friendliness of the material would be advantageous in expanding the industrialized applications of soybean meal-based resins.
