Abstract

Some new prototypes of external fixation devices for open-bone human fractures are described in this work. The analysis and design of the prototypes were based on a 3D modelling and a finite-element analysis, in order to determine the stress distributions in the devices to obtain improved, resistant and light designs. The geometries of the new devices are designed and modelled using the Pro/engineer commercial software. The fixators were manufactured by using different materials such as quirurgical steel, aluminium alloys and reinforced plastics, in order to obtain light apparatus. The prototypes were used in real-life situations, i.e. in human patients at the Universitary Hospital. The clinical history evolution of the patients showed a satisfactory performance of the devices.
