Abstract

Disasters and disaster relief have been the subject of academic study for more than half a century. Psychological assistance is an important part of the process. Researchers have identified a number of recurring problems that emerge during interventions. Arts-based disaster relief offers important and unique advantages and provides answers to some of these problems. The article presents and analyses four examples of arts-based disaster relief programmes, identifying how they succeed in overcoming some frequently encountered difficulties. It concludes by noting enduring problems that arts-based disaster relief needs to resolve in the future.
