- Tissue engineering has emerged as permanent solution to treat people suffering from severe pain because of tissue loss and damage. In this technique, the key challenge is the development of scaffold with desirable characteristics like mechanical strength, biomimic properties and surface characteristics. Natural polymers are more biocompatible and induce mineralisation of bone/cartilage tissue as compared to the commonly used synthetic polymers (e.g., PLA and PLGA). This paper describes the various types of natural biopolymers for the development of tissue engineered scaffolds, mode of applications, surface modification and characterisation. A combination of modification and analysis techniques ensures better interpretation of results.
