Graphical abstract: Abstract: A possible biosynthetic link between atropurpuran, the hetidine diterpenoid alkaloids and the alkaloid arcutine and congeners is proposed. The feasibility of aspects of this biosynthesis, especially key 1, 2-rearrangements, have been examined computationally.
