Abstract

In spite of being the second largest overall producer of vegetables, India is wasting around one third of its output due to various reasons. Another study identified the wastages at different distribution stages of vegetable supply chain from farm gate to retail end and discovered that the retailing stage was realising maximum wastages. Value loss could become very high for farmers, retailers and consumers if vegetable retailers realised more wastage. Hence this study attempted to determining causes of wastages at vegetable retail stores by analysing its distribution chain from farm gate. This study was conducted in four locations of Tamilnadu such as Chennai, Dindugul, Coimbatore and sub-urban areas of Chennai. This study identified major sources of wastages in vegetable retail stores and their root causes viz., long travel distances, lack of labour, poor packing methods, damage due to handling during cleaning, sorting and grading as significant sources of wastages.
