Abstract

Most of the fresh water bodies all over the world are getting polluted day by day, which has become a burning issue of present time. Hence their regular monitoring is crucial for the well-being and health of the surrounding population. Therefore in the present investigation, we carried out a systematic study to estimate the physico-chemical parameters and level of toxic heavy metal content in the Jail Talav and Kalwa Lakes of Thane City of the Indian State of Maharashtra. The toxic heavy metal content and physico-chemical parameters studied in the present investigation were found to be very much above the permissible limits, thereby making lake water harmful to the aquatic life and unsuitable for drinking/irrigation purpose. These heavy metals have a marked effect on the aquatic flora and fauna which through biomagnification enter the food chain and ultimately affect the human beings as well.
