- Abstract: Conventional thermal-spray TiO2 ceramic coating is widely used in machinery industry and captures much attention over the years. Nevertheless, additional improvement of mechanical properties of the coating should be desirable due to its relatively low hardness and intrinsic brittleness. In this study, a novel plasma-spray TiO2 -CNTs nanocomposite coating was prepared and its mechanical properties was tested and compared to non-reinforced TiO2 coating fabricated on the same route. The results showed that the uniform dispersion of CNTs and strong wettability of TiO2 -CNT interface caused formation of remarkable CNTs bridging between plasma-spray splats. Consequently, an amount as small as 3 wt% CNTs addition exerted a substantial influence on TiO2 coating toughness, and also promoted notably higher hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness than conventional TiO2 coating. The observed toughening mechanisms were crack bridging, crack deflection, CNTs pull-out complemented by a strong CNT/TiO2 interface. More importantly, this study spreads the application of CNTs in more thermal-spray ceramic coatings to reinforce their mechanical properties.
