- Abstract : An extremity injury (fracture or dislocation) requiring vascular repair is a challenging emergency surgical condition that requires a multidisciplinary approach. In North America, the general surgeon is typically the "team lead" as many of these patients are at risk for or already in extremis, with the vascular surgery and orthopaedic surgery services being consulted to treat the extremity injury. These limb-threatening, and many times life-threatening, injuries are best treated at a trauma center where appropriate personnel and resources are available. It is important that practice guidelines be set by the treating teams so that discussion and debate can take place in an academic setting prior to treating what is invariably an emergency problem.
