- Abstract: In the present research, Cr7 C3 -V8 C7 - MgCr2 O4 nanocomposite was directly synthesized via a one-step magnesiothermic-assisted mechanochemical method from V2 O5 –CrO3 –Mg–C mixture. The reduction of metal oxides to metal carbides was done during milling without any further heat treatment. Transmission electron micrographs revealed that Cr7 C3 -V8 C7 -MgCr2 O4 composite with a particle size ranging from 40 to 300 nm can be synthesized after 3 min of milling via a mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction. Leaching treatment with hydrochloric acid removed MgO and purified the composite particles. Based on the experimental results and thermodynamic calculations, reaction mechanism for the formation of Cr7 C3 -V8 C7 -MgCr2 O4 composite is discussed.
