- Abstract: The present study sought to examine a diathesis-stress model involving hope and trauma history as predictors of depressive and anxious symptoms in a sample of 575 college students. Results from regression analyses indicated that hope and trauma were important and unique predictors of both depressive and anxious symptoms in students. Moreover, we found support for a significant Hope × Trauma interaction in predicting both depressive and anxious symptoms. Some implications of the present findings are discussed. Highlights: Examined a diathesis-stress model involving hope and trauma as predictors of symptoms. Both hope and trauma were unique predictors of depressive and anxious symptoms. We found support for a Hope × Trauma interaction in predicting symptoms. Low hope individuals who experienced trauma reported the highest levels of symptoms.
