- Highlights: Two SE(B) test procedures were compared in a single specimen. The difference in definition of CTOD strongly influences CTOD estimations. CTOD-resistance curves from two SE(B) tests produce the similar results initially. The departure of two resistance curves is observed as the crack extends. Abstract: SE(B) testing was conducted at room temperature on an X70 pipe material. Two toughness methods – ASTM E1820 and the double-clip gauge method – were combined in a single specimen to experimentally compare the J-conversion CTOD of ASTM E1820 with the geometrically-estimated CTOD under identical conditions. The results show that the difference in definition of CTOD strongly influences CTOD estimations. The paper discusses details of the experiment and the results.
