- Abstract: Mechanical and tribological characteristics of glass epoxy composites with aluminium particulate (5-15 wt%) filler are experimentally investigated. Mechanical test is conducted on INSTRON 8801 whereas tribological characterization is done using a pin on disc type friction and wear monitor as per ASTM standards. With a fixed wt% of fiber reinforcement, and different wt% aluminium powder filler, glass epoxy composites are fabricated in conventional hand lay up technique followed by light compression moulding process. Tribological experiments are conducted for fixed speed, load and sliding distance. Worn surface features are examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results show steady decrease of tensile strength with aluminium powder addition. Friction and wear of 5 and 10 wt% aluminium content composites are less than unfilled glass epoxy composite. Glass epoxy composite with 5 wt% aluminium has the lowest frictional and wear characteristics whereas composite having 15 wt% aluminium shows the highest friction and wear.
