- One of the main machining operations to create or widen the holes for bolts or screws to fasten the mechanical parts together is drilling operation. Peck drilling is a very similar machining operation to conventional drilling in which drilling is performed in an interrupted fashion to prevent chip accumulation in front of the tool particularly when creating deep holes. Peck drilling includes repeatedly plunging and retracting the tool to finish the hole. Peck drilling demonstrates its superior performance by delivering extended tool life, higher surface quality and higher removal rate in comparison to drilling. In this paper, an analysis of exergy flow for the two drilling methods is presented and the effects of various cutting parameters are analysed. Comparison of exergy efficiencies for the two techniques proves that peck drilling is more successful in achieving the objectives of sustainable manufacturing.
