Abstract

Abstract : The cover picture shows the four steps of a synthetic cycle for the synthesis of benzonitrile with direct use of N2 as nitrogen source. The sequence relies on Re‐mediated splitting of dinitrogen into nitride complexes. Subsequent N‐benzylation and deprotonation give a ketimido complex. Oxidation with N‐chlorsuccinimide (NCS) releases benzonitrile and restores the parent rhenium(IV) pincer complex. The quasi‐catalytic reaction sequence affords benzonitrile in about 30% yield over all four steps. ReNCHCH3 /ReNCCH3 isomerization observed in acetonitrile synthesis with this platform seems to be irrelevant as the benzonitrile product cannot form an imido tautomer.
