- Abstract: Nanostructured bainite and dispersed carbide particles were formed in Si–Mo-alloyed high-C–Cr bearing steels by low-temperature austempering after partial austenitizing in the intercritical gamma + carbide region. Comparing with conventional quenched and tempered high-C–Cr bearing steel, the impact toughness is remarkably enhanced; the hardness is still adequate for the bearings even though it is slightly decreased. Graphical abstract: Highlights: High-C–Cr bearing steel was alloyed by adding Si and Mo. Si–Mo-alloyed bearing steels were austempered at low temperatures. Nanostructured bainite and dispersed carbide particles are obtained. Adequate hardness and markedly enhanced impact toughness are achieved.
