Abstract

Abstract: Sport mega-events have been shown to affect the hosting city in many ways. Hosting this kind of event can elevate city's global image and accelerate its economical, socio-cultural and political development. The aim of this article is to investigate the pre- and post-perceptions of positive and negative aspects of a sport mega-event for resident of Naples. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to analyze residents' perceptions of positive and negative aspects of hosting a sport mega-event. Statistically significant differences were found between pre- and post-event perceptions concerning economical, socio-cultural and political factors. Empirical results of this study can be used as a theoretical base for explaining how a sporting mega-event can support social development. Highlights: We examine sport mega-event's effect on hosting city's development. We invesgate residents' perceptions prior and post the event. We evidence changes in perceptions.
