- Abstract: Improving both the activity and stability of the cathode catalyst in platinum-based polymer electrolyte fuel cells is a key technical challenge for next-generation sustainable-energy conversion technologies. Here, we synthesize a high surface area supported meso-structured Ptx Ni alloy thin film with a double gyroid morphology that both exhibits high activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction. Graphical abstract: Highlights: The DG Ptx Ni is the first fully contiguous large area supported thin film of a highly ordered mesoporous metal alloy. The DG Ptx Ni alloy thin film exhibit both high specific and mass activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The DG Ptx Ni remains intact and maintains high activity even after intensive accelerated stability testing.
