- Highlights: The corrosion process of magnesium was associated with the change of electrolyte composition. The presence of carbonate and sulfate ions decreased the corrosion potentials but increased the corrosion rates of samples. The introduction of carbonate led to the formation of magnesium carbonate which would result in surface passivation. The formation of a corrosion product film could provide protection for the mechanical integrity of magnesium. Abstract: The corrosion behavior of magnesium material in different mediums containing similar ions to that of simulated body fluid was investigated by electrochemical approaches and immersion tests. It was shown that the corrosion of magnesium was influenced by the composition of the solution. Furthermore, this study also indicated that the mechanical integrity of magnesium was associated with the compositions of the fluid mediums. Based on the above results, we could further understand the corrosion process and the associated hydroxyapatite mineralization of magnesium material in a physiological environment.
