- Abstract : Background: Prolonged hypertension may lead to cardiac remodeling characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and diastolic dysfunction (DD). Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is a marker for cardiac remodeling. Studies that examined the relationship between plasma MMP-9 and DD showed inconsistent result and did not differentiate between concentric and eccentric LVH. Objective: This study aimed to assess the correlation between plasma MMP-9 with DD through the examination of the E/e' in patients with concentric LVH. Method: This is a cross sectional study in hypertensive patients with concentric LVH. E/e' value obtained from the average of septal E/e' and lateral E/e'. Assessment of E/e' and plasma MMP-9 performed on the same day. Relationship of plasma MMP-9 and E/e' was analyzed using Spearman correlation. Result: 39 subjects (14 male, 35.9%) were included in analysis, mean age 55 (±10) years, body weight 63.45 (±12.97) kg, height 155.51 (±7.12) cm, body mass index average 26.23 (±5.08) kg/m 2, relative wall thickness 0.7(±0.15) cm. Median systolic blood pressure 140 (110–220) mmHg, diastolic blood pressure 80 (70–110) mmHg, and left ventricular mass index 119.24 (103.05–205.69) g/m 2, plasma MMP-9 108 (4–460) ng/mL, E/e' 10.99 (6.2–20.42). There was positive correlation between plasma MMP-9 and E/e' ( r = 0.416, p = 0.004). Conclusion: This study showed significant correlation between plasma MMP-9 and E/e' in patients with concentric LVH.
