- Abstract: Blue-emitting Sr3− y Ba y MgSi2 O8 : x Eu 2+ powders were synthesized by a sol–gel-combustion hybrid process, which could significantly shorten process time compared to a conventional sol–gel processing. The phase formation, particle morphologies, and luminescence of the powders synthesized with various amounts of flux, Eu, and Ba were investigated and discussed. The emission bands of Sr3 MgSi2 O8 :Eu 2+ assigned to Eu(I) were observed at an approximate wavelength of 460 nm, peaking at the Eu concentration of x =0.015. The emission peaks originating from Eu(II, III) were not observed. It was inferred from XRD analysis that the slight increase of intensity at wavelengths greater than 500 nm could be attributed to the Sr2 MgSi2 O7 :Eu 2+ and Sr2 SiO4 :Eu 2+ impurity phases. The Ba substitution for Sr resulted in a blue-shift of the excitation and emission bands. These phenomena were explained by the difference in ionic radii and covalence between Sr 2+ and Ba 2+ . Crystallographic data of Sr3− y Ba y MgSi2 O8 :Eu 2+ powders were obtained by Rietveld refinement.
