- Abstract: The newly proposed combustion model, the second-order moment (SOM) turbulent combustion model is validated a-priori using the DNS database of combustion. It is found that the assumption of neglecting the density fluctuation and the third-order fluctuation correlation terms is acceptable. The fluctuation averaged closure method for the mean reaction-rate coefficient can be a promising method. The comparison of the terms in the correlation equations indicates that the chemical reaction term plays a dominant role, followed by the production term and the diffusion term. The predicted production term is in good agreement with the exact production term. The validation of the dissipation term shows that the performance of the closure is not promising but can be acceptable due to its less contribution. The predicted reaction terms are validated and discussed. Two modified reaction-term closure methods are proposed for different fluctuation correlation equations. It is concluded that the SOM combustion model is a promising one for the future development of turbulent combustion models.
